De Hessenhof

Organic nursery

Welcome to nursery De Hessenhof

Since 1981, nursery "De Hessenhof", located on the Veluwe, has grown into a unique place. Here, plants are grown organically without peat, in leaf mould, and everything is propagated in-house. The intimate atmosphere between hedges and hedgerows makes it special, and visitors are welcome for a drink in the atmospheric nursery barn. With over two hectares of land and a team of 7-8 people in high season, we grow some 3,000 varieties of perennials every year, possibly the largest assortment in Western Europe.

Due to growing demand, plants are sometimes sold out, for which we ask for your understanding. If you want to avoid the crowds, come early, as it can be very busy in fine weather. It remains a wonderful profession and our passion. You are welcome to experience this special place for yourself!

Organic plants

The word organic is often used loosely, but it is a protected term. Only certified products may be called organic. At our nursery, you’ll find only Skal-certified organically grown plants. We often hear, “Is it worth it?” and “Isn’t it more expensive?” Organically grown plants are stronger because they are not forced with artificial fertilizers. We use organic fertilizers and living leaf mould with microorganisms, creating a natural balance. We enhance this with mycorrhiza and compost tea. No rushed, overfed plants here—just healthy, resilient ones that can handle stress.

Our costs are no higher than conventional nurseries. Thanks to natural balance, we don’t need expensive pesticides or artificial fertilizers, and self-propagation is always cheaper.

Own propagation

Own propagation is the hallmark of nursery De Hessenhof. Since 1981, we have grown our own plants, which is rare today. Many growers buy young plants and call themselves growers without ever propagating. We see this as inferior and a waste of the most enjoyable work! Self-propagation ensures varietal purity, plant health, and reduces CO₂ emissions from transport. Organic ornamental plants are also hard to find.

We sometimes buy plants, but only patented varieties like Alstroemeria ‘Indian Summer’ and Brunnera ‘Sea Heart’. We apply for a Skal exemption and grow them organically. The same goes for seeds like columbines; we buy them to maintain colors. This keeps us true to our philosophy: as organic and self-sufficient as possible.

Leaf mould

For over 40 years, we have grown our plants in leaf mould—a choice that began when we saw valuable leaves from a nearby cemetery being discarded. Since then, we have composted our own leaf mould, which makes up 85% of our potting soil. The benefits were clear: slow, even growth resulting in strong, well-hardened plants. In winter, leaf mould drains better than peat, which often becomes waterlogged. To maintain structure, we add organic fertilizers, bark, and volcanic rock.

Fortunately, awareness of reducing peat use is growing. Peat extraction causes major environmental damage and releases large amounts of CO₂ during harvesting, transport, and decomposition. Many nurseries are cutting back, some even eliminating peat entirely. We welcome this shift, as it raises awareness. Our use of leaf mould proves that plants can be grown sustainably and peat-free without compromising quality or growth.
