Bibliography

Although there is a lot of information available on the internet, there is also a lot of nonsense. People copy things, and sometimes we even see our own text copied word for word, complete with photos. There are some good books about perennials, but we haven't seen any new publications for years. However, with a little searching, you can find the books listed below second-hand. The ones we use most are listed at the top.

  • "Die Freiland Smuckstauden" (The Freiland Ornamental Shrubs) - Jelitto, Schacht and Simon, 2 volumes. 2002

  • "Perennials & Rock Shrubs" - John Bergmans 1939

  • "Perennial Garden Plants" third edition - Graham Stuart Thomas 1990

  • "Illustrated Flora of the Netherlands" - Heimans, Heinsius and Thijsse

  • "Flora of Cultivated Herbaceous Plants" - Dr. B.K. Boom 1975

  • "The Explorer's Garden, Rare and Unusual Perennials" - Daniel J. Hinkley, 1999

  • "Encyclopedia of Alpines" - Alpine Garden Society 1993

  • "Our outdoor perennials - Ernst Graf Silva Tarouca 1913

  • "The English Rock Garden" - Reginald Farrer, reprinted in 1919

  • "Hardy Ferns" - Reginald Kaye 1968

  • "More Dream Plants", Henk Gerritsen & Piet Oudolf 1999

  • "The Colour Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses" - Rick Darke 1999

  • "Beautiful Grass" - Michael King & Piet Oudolf 1996

  • "An Encyclopedia of Shade Perennials" - W. George Schmid 2003

  • "The Hillier Manual of Trees and Shrubs" - Hillier 1993

There are, of course, countless monographs on individual plant genera. We will mention the most important ones.

  • "Gardening with Hardy Geraniums" - Birgitte Husted Bendtsen

  • "The New Book of Salvia's" - Betsy Clebsch, 2003

  • "Pulmonaria and the Borage Family" - Masha Bennet 2003

  • "Phlox for the garden" - Birgitte Husted Bendtsen

  • "Hellebores, a comprehensive Guide" - C. Colston Burrel & Judith Knott Tyler 2006

Furthermore, there is a monograph written about every plant genus imaginable. For the naming, we have followed:

  • "RHS Plant Finder" is published annually.

  • https://wfoplantlist.org for all valid and invalid botanical names of all plants ever described.
