Closed for the summer from 1 June to 5 August 2026
This means that the nursery will be closed for two months. And we mean completely closed – even the mother plants will not be on display during this period. The nursery will also remain closed to groups and coach parties.
Why are we doing this?
We did not take this decision lightly. We have been considering it for years and have spent hours discussing it. There are various reasons for this, and we hope you will understand.
Climate change
This is certainly causing us problems. We can no longer even grow certain plants, such as Meconopsis and Anemonopsis. Extreme weather conditions are becoming more frequent and lasting longer. We saw this during last year’s extremely dry early summer, with temperatures reaching 38°C in June. And on top of that, we have to propagate plants during that period.
It’s not just us, but you too can feel it in the garden: summers are getting hotter and drier. Because helping plants through the summer by constantly watering them is a lot of work and not very sustainable. We notice this a little more each year. These changing weather conditions are making us think more and more. Of course, we’re used to being able to do whatever we want, whenever we want, but let’s be realistic and simply go with nature and do what works best. Perhaps it is time — even with our potted plants — to return to the natural rhythm of the past: planting in spring and autumn.
Our stock of available plants is running low
You’ve probably noticed this yourself when visiting our nursery. It’s getting busier and busier, and it stays that way all summer long. In June and July, we have almost as many customers as we do in April. The stock on the beds in the spring (which was therefore grown the previous year) runs out in June. During that period, the growing season has only just begun. Many plants have only just been cutted or sown and sometimes haven’t even been potted yet. So we have to turn a lot of customers away during that period. And that’s in June and July, just when the mother beds are at their best. Many people understand how it works, but many don’t get it at all. You then get complaints along the lines of: “How is that possible? The mother beds are in full glory and you have almost nothing of what I want.” We’re getting a bit tired of explaining this every time and apologising for it. By reopening in August, the plants have had plenty of time to root properly and grow. Then we can open with confidence, and the nursery will be brimming with freshly potted but well-rooted plants.
It gives us growers more stability and balance during the busy growing season
By staying open from March to November, you’re effectively ‘on duty’ throughout that entire period. We’ve been doing this for 45 years, but a lot has changed during that time. In the past, customers mainly came in the spring and autumn, and things were quiet in the summer. Now, the flow of visitors continues throughout the season. For a nursery that propagates absolutely everything itself, that’s a real challenge – we have to stay on top of things. The tender, young cuttings and seedlings need to be protected from the fierce sun, not to mention watering or misting. Especially in early summer, that takes priority over everything else. We’re finding it increasingly difficult to find time for that during the height of summer, when we’re open three days a week. By closing for two months, we can focus entirely on propagation and cultivation. Ultimately, this will only benefit the quality of the plants. And you’ll benefit from that too.
For 45 years, we have been working at the nursery with great dedication and enjoyment. Interest continues to grow every year, and we are grateful for that. This decision has not been an easy one for us, and it will also mean some restrictions for you regarding visits. Nevertheless, this is the only way for us to continue this wonderful nursery business with the same enthusiasm and enjoyment.
