October – a great month for planting!

Get a head start on spring and plant now! The soil is still warm and you don’t need to worry about over-watering. Plants you plant now only have one thing to do: put down roots. In spring, they’ll need to put down roots and grow. That’s quite difficult in soil that’s drying out and getting warmer. What’s more, you can see exactly what you’re buying now. Many plants are in bloom right now. Try finding that in spring! We still have plenty of plants in stock. Take a look under the plants heading – it’s updated every Wednesday evening. In any case, in light of climate change, we need to rethink spring planting. So tackle that garden in the autumn. The plants will sprout next spring with a fully developed root system and will be much better able to cope with the dry summer weather that follows. Especially if you improve the soil further with our leaf compost.

The asters have never looked so beautiful!

Whilst the mother plants looked rather battered after the summer, following the rain of the last few weeks it feels almost like spring all over again. Only this time with autumn asters. We can’t remember when they’ve ever looked so beautiful. There are at least 70 varieties! There are also vast clusters of chrysanthemums, vernonia and sunflowers in bloom. The black cohosh and knotweed have also recovered nicely from the drought. In short, it’s a true grand finale to the season. In fact, the mother beds haven’t looked this good all year.
