An exciting new year: changes in 2026
Now that everything is covered in a thick blanket of snow (there's about 20 cm here!), the nursery is completely quiet. It's high time to wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2026! Everything is still quiet now, but we are already looking forward to welcoming you back in March.
It has been a long time since we had this much snow. It always makes us feel good. There is no better protection for plants. And how beneficial it is for the seed pots and frost germinators that we all sowed back in November. With a layer of snow on top, they will sprout noticeably better.
What are our hopes for the rest of the year? We already mentioned the word 'fertile'. For us, that means moderate temperatures, some sunshine and certainly occasional rain. Fortunately, that fertile weather is still with us, but the extremes are becoming more frequent and longer lasting. We saw this during last year's extremely dry early summer. For a nursery that propagates everything itself, this means a lot of hard work; we have to be on top of things. The soft, young cuttings and seedlings must be protected from the bright sun, not to mention watering or misting. Especially in early summer, this is paramount. It is becoming increasingly difficult for us to find time for this in the heat of summer, when we are open three days a week. Not only us, but you too can feel it in the garden: summers are getting warmer and drier. Because helping plants through the summer by watering and misting them is a lot of work and not very sustainable. We notice this a little more every year. These changing weather conditions are making us think more and more. Of course, we are used to being able to do everything we want, whenever we want, but let's be realistic and just go with nature and do what works best.
That is why we are faced with a choice that is not easy to make: we are going to introduce a summer break. Perhaps it is time to return to the natural rhythm of the past, even for our potted plants: planting in the spring and autumn. At the beginning of June, we will have used up our old stock, and in the meantime, the nursery is already filling up with newly potted plants. They are promising, but they still need time to grow strong, to develop into plants that we can really stand behind. That is why we have made the following decision:
Summer break in June and July
This means that the nursery will be closed for two months. And we mean really closed, including visits to the mother beds. This gives us time to focus all our attention on propagating and growing young plants.
Specifically, the nursery will be closed from 1 June to 5 August 2026.
For 45 years, we have been working with great dedication and pleasure at the nursery. Interest continues to grow every year, and we are grateful for that. This decision has not been an easy one for us, and it will also mean restrictions for you in terms of visiting. However, this is the only way for us to continue this wonderful profession with the same enthusiasm and enjoyment. We hope for your understanding and look forward to reopening on Thursday 19 March!
